On a rock in the rich landscape on the western slope of the Schober lie the ruins of Wartenfels castle.
The castle was built by Konrad von Kahlham in 1259. Konrad named himself henceforth "von Wartenfels". The archbishop of Salzburg (owner since 1326) constructed a court at Wartenfels, which first commanded over the entire area of Thalgau, Faistenau, Fuschl, and Abersee. Towards the end of the 16th century, the stewards relocated to Thalgau. In 1564, when a court building was erected in Thalgau, the castle was left to decay.
