Drachenwand via ferrata - a new trial of courage
The Drachenwand via ferrata at St. Lorenz was opened to climbers and mountaineers in 2009. The route runs over solid rocks, along the Ostgrat to the summit of the Drachenwand. The total length of the via ferrata is 600 m and ascends 400 meters. Fixed steel cables and rope ladders secure the difficult routes (degree of difficulty 60 % B/ 40 % C). The length of the route and the stamina required should not be underestimated.
Appropriate safety equipment is therefore a must. The summit of the Drachenwand offers a fantastic vantage point in clear weather to see the surrounding mountains and lakes in Salzkammergut.
Since July 2010 the via ferrata contains a new attraction. A 20 m long suspension bridge stretches itself from the Franzosenschanze till the Pfeilerwand. A huge amount of courage is necessary to cross the bridge 300 m high above the ground.
